Windows and mac disk format8/20/2023 ![]() Launch Disk Utility press Command+Space then type: disk. In the window that opens, enter a name for your disk and choose the file system with which you will format it. In the disk manager window, right-click on the external hard drive and select Format. If the Security Options button is not available, Disk Utility cannot perform a secure erase on the storage device. If you only use a Mac computer, you can format your thumb drive to work on Windows systems. Press the Windows + X keys, and then select Disk Management. ![]() Secure erase options are available only for some types of storage devices. (Optional) If available, click Security Options, use the slider to choose how many times to write over the erased data, then click OK. If the Scheme pop-up menu isn’t available, make sure you selected the storage device you want to erase-it’s at the top of the hierarchy.Ĭlick the Format pop-up menu, then choose a file system format.
